Getting Started

"Everyone has ancestors and it is only a question of going back far enough to find a good one." -- Howard Kenneth Nixon

If you are new to genealogy, we will be glad to help you get started! Please ask when you visit the library and one of us will assist you. It's a good idea to come prepared with names and dates written down, and some change for copies.

Not only does the library have everything you need to begin, but there are many online resources to learn about genealogy, too. Here are just a few:

Getting started with family history from FamilySearch

How to Build a Family Tree from the National Genealogical Society

Resources for Genealogists from The National Archives

Getting Started in genealogy from Ancestry.com

Family Tree University from Family Tree Magazine has online courses for every level of researcher

The Ultimate Guide to Military Records for Genealogy from Genealogy Explained
